How Could This Happen?

Austrian’s body found 5 years after death

Man’s rent continued to be automatically withdrawn after he died

VIENNA - Austrian authorities have discovered the body of a man who apparently died at home in bed five years ago, a Vienna newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The corpse of Franz Riedl, thought to have been in his late 80s when he died, went undetected for so long because his rent had been paid by automatic order from the bank account into which he received his pension, the daily Kurier said.

I think that has got to be one of the saddest stories I have read in a while, an old man dying alone in his bed, and not a soul on the face of the earth missed him, not even his neighbors, and nobody noticing for five years. FIVE YEARS!

Why was the old man so alone in the world?

We'll die that way. As humans we make a space between those we love when they're ill. We know it's coming for us and we shun it. I'm doing it now and I know it's wrong. I know I'm next.

But what a great way spend time in Vienna! Like there's anything else to do! Come, watch the natives die without being truly loved!

Again I rant on you web-space.... My bad.

Rant away Mark, I expect I'll do the same on your blog when you post something deep and profound. ;-)

I feel that way sometimes. But there would be a financial incentive for people to contact me. That man was too, too accomadating.

Really sad story. You would think that somebody would have been olfactorily aware that something was not right. At least.

That's a pretty large crack to slip through. I do wonder why he was so totally alone in the world.

At least I can rest assured that I will be found in about a month. After that there would not be enough funds for more automatic withdrawals of my rent money and my dead self would be evicted.
