Can you say........

Dumbass?

Sure, less than a week on the job and lets piss off the U.S. (among other countries). That makes total sense.

I won't argue with the dumbass comment (which is true for a variety of reasons), but I don't like the idea of American or any other foreign vessels trespassing in Canadian waters.

Not because I actually care whether they sail their ships through the northwest passage or not, but because it creates a slippery slope, i.e. if that's okay, then how about:

- building an off-shore oil rig in those waters

- test-firing cruise missiles over Canadian Arctic lands

- fishing for endangered/protected species of fish in Canadian waters off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland

- spiriting CIA agents into Canada to pay a friendly visit to suspected terr'ists

- arresting Canadians traveling to the United States for having previously vacationed in Cuba

- sending the U.S. army into Toronto to, you know, help us keep order

Some of these have already happened.

Has that been a major issue in Canada, that someone might want to take a shortcut across the frozen tundra? Enough of an issue to piss off the nearest neighbor this soon?

Call me cynical, but I personally think politician (all of them, every last one in every last country) are a bunch of used car salesmen and will do and say anything to get what they want and to further advance their scope of power.

I also think some of them are a little more savvy and will at least bide their time and strike when it causes less damage. He should have at least waited until he passed his first week anniversary.

Point taken on Harper should have waited at least a week - no arguments there. :)

I can't say it's been a major issue for most Canadians. Very few of us have ever been to the Arctic.

I personally have no objection to foreign ships cutting across the Canadian Arctic. My issue is when it's done without permission, because that sort of thinking begins the slippery slope toward some of the other territorial incursions I listed above.

You probably wouldn't want me sneaking into the U.S. illegally from Canada in order to take a shortcut to Mexico. But I'm sure you'd have no problem with me entering the U.S. legally to do so.

Haven't you been watching the news? It doesn't matter what the citizens want (as far as illegal immigration is concerned). The administration allows it to continue. We're just the cash crop for the government. They no more listen to us than a farmer would listen to the opinion of his herd of cows.

(Sorry, but I did tell you I was cynical about it.. you were warned. lol)
